Spurred by discovery of a lung cancer cluster in southeastern Sussex County, Delaware health officials plan to review cancer data for the entire state in search of other trouble spots.
The state Division of Public Health will scan the state's Cancer Registry -- a multi-year database with details about every cancer case -- in search of elevated disease rates.
State Public Health Associate Deputy Director Paul Silverman said the decision was prompted by public reaction to the finding of high lung cancer rates in a six-ZIP code area nearly as large as all of New Castle County centered loosely on Millsboro. Further research will narrow the focus to smaller census tracts within each ZIP code, and expand the review across Delaware. [...]
