Every day, hazardous materials, including flammable gases and liquids, pass through Lafayette by train, traveling next to homes and businesses, skirting the downtown area where thousands work during the week and passing within yards of the city's main utility plant.
Not surprisingly, railroad companies do not publicize the types or quantities of hazardous materials that they transport through communities like Lafayette.
