Paper Ballots and Audits in Time for Election Day 2008! Tell Your Congressman to Vote for HR 5036

Web Note: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Congress will vote on an emergency election reform bill that will provide funding to states for voter verified paper ballots and for audits on Election Day.  TrueVoteMD.org just succeeded in ending paperless electronic voting in Maryland and is now working on federal legsilation.

Below is the email we are sending to the TrueVoteMD list.  We've set up the TrueVoteMD.org action alert to send letters to every member of Congress from constituents in their District. You can go to http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1331/t/3732/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=24240 and send an email to your representative in Congress.

Please share this widely.  We need a big vote in favor of transparent democracy on Tuesday.

Paper Ballots and Audits in Time for Election Day 2008!

Tell Your Congressman to Vote for HR 5036 "The Emergency Election Assistance for Secure Elections Act"

Victory Again!

Rep. Steny Hoyer has scheduled a House Floor vote on "The Emergency Election Assistance for Secure Elections Act" for this Tuesday.

In just a few days the Majority Leader received hundreds of letters from TrueVoters and he quickly scheduled a vote. Your response helped make the difference.

Now our goal is as strong a House vote as possible to demonstrate that all Americans agree we need to have a true vote a vote we can trust.

Two steps are needed:

1.     Send this email to people you know especially, outside of Maryland. We need a national vote. The TrueVoteMD.org website is set up to send emails to every member of Congress from voters in their district. (HERE) Forward this email widely and urge those who receive it to do the same.
2.     Send a letter to your representative in Congress. Click HERE to send the letter.  While this federal bill will not change Maryland law (transition to paper-ballots is in 2010) we need our representatives to help build a large majority in the House.

Only 17 states have a voter verified paper record and require an audit (For example, Maryland does not require an audit).  H.R. 5036 will help ensure election integrity in time for the November 2008 election by providing funds for voter verified paper records and audits of the vote on Election Day.

On Tuesday, April 15 the U.S. House of Representatives will vote so please send the letter IMMEDIATELY.  Click HERE to send the letter.

Counting the vote right in a way people can trust is the foundation of legitimate government.  We know the solution.  Now we must make transparent democracy national.

Sincerely,

Kevin Zeese

P.S. Thank Rep. Hoyer at http://hoyer.house.gov/contact/email.asp.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW.
